A Walk On the Other Side

Anonymous started this conversation

Funny, when I had money I was always giving it away. My favorite cause was animal groups, but I frequently gave to people on the streets.

It's wierd what hard times does to people. I was treated rudely at Salvation Army, Energy Asistance and Welfare (Food and Medicaid). And no, I did nothing to deserve it. I realized they are slammed, but that's no excuse. I really think it is the quality of people that are placed in these jobs. Or is it that the needy are perceived as powerless?

As someone who used to live comfortably before I became ill, it's interesting to see what poor people experience.

in response to Needs-a-break...   How very right you are. You know I try to look at the brighter side but it is so hard these days. I see the hope draing from my husbands face and it just kills me. I am not sure just how long we will have access to the internet. So if we disappear foir a long time you will know why. The man was here sunday and said he was going to the sheriff and have us evicted and he refuses to rewrite contract. You know people like that just seems to get richer by taking advantage of those like us, and you are so right on the charities. I now question where ,what, and to who our donations went to and exactly what they were used for.We donated alot thru the years to charities for people in the exact position we are in and I hand wrote letters to these charities asking for assisstance and help and they tell me they don't have any money they need money. Where did this money go? Have you ever really questioned? I never did I just gave and they were legit charities. I feel all the bailout money obama gave out should have went to us the struggling people instead of the rich banks,   car dealers and every other outfit he gave money to. They are hoarding the money and not even giving loans like they were suppose to. I really feel for our children and grandchildren. This world will never be the same as we knew it. I did check into a site called beg to a millionaire and I am seeing if it is legit.

Needs-a-break
in response to traincar...   My heart is with you. It's the same for me and my family.  It seems to be a crime that we experience hard times.  When we "had", we  gave.  Now that we have almost nothing, we get nothing.  Those that we helped ... look the other way.  Sad, it is.

in response to Help_88...   We know exactly what you mean. When I and my wife was working we gave to about every charity and foundation that asked and we would even feed homeless people who asked for money. Instead of giving them money we would take them to a restaurant and buy them a meal and I'm not talking macdonalds. We would take them to the sizzler. Since I had my heart attack and later developed copd and emphesymia my wife quit work to care for me we had to apply for foodstamps the people were flat out rude. I figure there will be a time in their life where they will need help and maybe be treated the same as they treated us. There is nothing worse than when you need help and you feel like you are bothering or being a burden to them. Thats their job and thats what they are getting paid for. Even worse, when I think of all the money we gave freely when asked and even when we were not asked, now we ask for help and get nothing. Don't get me wrong, if you can afford to give thats great and I think one should but these same charities should also give back. I don't know about your state but ours the salvation army, good will and st vincent de paul stores get everything given and donated to them and then they stick a high price tag on it and sometimes you can buy it brand new for less.
